Welcome to Time Out - an iconic brand

Time Out is an international, multimedia publisher of cultural experiences that provides inspiration to city dwellers around the world. In the summer of 1968, with only a £70 present from his aunt, Tony Elliott (a classmate of Richard Branson) published the first issue of Time Out London.

In that opening letter, Tony wrote: ‘We have tried to make our information as comprehensives as possible but at the same time we have been very selective, in so much as the places we list are the places we think are worth your attention'. True to his word and that commitment to his readers to offer a ruthlessly independent mag, Tony remains at the helm of Time Out's global empire today, committed now as then. Now in 2008 Time Out is about to turn 40 and is now in 25 of the world's leading cities including New York, Moscow, Dubai and Hong Kong.

As a member of the Time Our global network, Time Out Sydney is an independent magazine and website published by a small team of hard working, dedicated and passionate Sydneysiders. It is your guide to better living. Since launching in September 2007, we've become the pre-eminent entertainment bible in the city. No one captures the pulse of this town and puts that heartbeat in print and online like we do. And we're trusted. We're committed to editorial independence.  We don't take freebies and we always review anonymously.

Every week we preview, investigate and celebrate everything that's hot and happening by tapping into Sydney's vast social spectrum of food, arts, bars, theatre, film, fashion, nightlife, outdoors, TV and music. Think of the mag in your hands and the website at your fingertips as bottled lightning - proof we live in a rich, racy, unique metropolis and that Sydney is a great city which deserves a great magazine and that Time Out is it.

Why does Time Out work so well in Sydney? Because from the first moment Arthur Phillip guided those 11 rusty buckets of human cargo through The Heads in 1788, Sydney has borne a hunger - a hunger for new experiences, fresh inspiration and independent ideals. And that's Time Out in a nutshell. Every week we strive to feature the good, the innovative and important and to go beyond the obvious to reveal the unusual, unexpected and undiscovered.

Above all, our responsibility is to our readers. And although they're just as likely to be males as female and vary in age from 18 to 81, Time Out readers have a lot in common. They are affluent and intelligent, they're busy and savvy and, most of all, they like going out - to restaurants, bars, cinemas, theatres, nightclubs but also into greater Sydney and all it's natural wonders - the beaches, parks, waterways and sprawling suburbs.

A magazine so firmly in the service of the people needs good people fueling its fire. Everyone who works for Time Out is passionate, even fanatical, about their subject. Time Out journalists are connected, respected and engaged - that makes them the best qualified people in town to collect definitive information in an entertaining way. Our reporters' mission is to do the best job possible of guiding both Sydneysiders and overseas visitors through the city we love and whose endless pleasures and hidden treasures are out there waiting to be discovered. What better way to do it than via a series of 14 mini-cultural magazines bolted together in 80 pages as Time Out Sydney?

Let's cut to the chase - Time Out is the clued-up urbanites' most trusted guide to life. But even we're sometimes amazed by the prodigious amount of culture Sydney offers. That's why we publish our magazine in tandem with a website filled to the gills with erudite but acerbic news, reviews, interviews, previews, investigations and footage, much of it created exclusively for the website. A few clicks away at you'll find a gateway to a comprehensive archive of all the informed, up-to-date information you'll need to get the best out of Sydney.

With almost a year under our belt now and for the next 100 and beyond, Time Out Sydney will strive to uphold Tony Elliott's pledge, inspiring the experiences that create the stories of a richer life.

Time Out Sydney: The Team

Editor-in-Chief: Angus Fontaine - A multiple award-winning writer across newspapers, magazines and the web and ex-editor of GQ Australia, Inside Cricket, Ralph, and Beer & Brewer, Fontaine hits the TOS editor's hot seat fresh from writing and hosting Discovery's top-rating travel show Five Star Insider.

Deputy Editor: Dan Rookwood - Famed in all four corners for his writing across sport, food, fashion and news, Dan is a decorated hack par excellence, having written for Good Weekend, GQ, and Alpha, edited sections for The Observer and Men's Health and won a BAFTA for his work with The Guardian.

Associate Editor: Sarah Norris - A music industry doyenne and former big chief running bear at Sydney's high-circulating street mag Drum Media (until TOS made her an offer she couldn't refuse), Sarah has written across fields as disparate as property, finance and film and excelled and won awards in each.

Food & Drink: Myf Rigby - Formerly head chef at the Sydney Seafood School, Myf bit down hard on Time Out's hook like the esteemed foodie she is. Friendly with providores, feared by restauranteurs and confidante of kitchen warriors, Miss Rigby is a woman with fingers (and tongue) in every pie in town.

Music & Nightlife: Andrew P Street - as the former music editor of Adelaide's dB Magazine and Associate Editor at Sydney's The Drum Media, as well as contributing to just about every music magazine in the country, Andrew has spent far too much of his life standing too close to PA speakers, flipping through record store racks and arguing about whether their new stuff is actually as good as their old stuff

Checkout, Gay & Lesbian: Andrew Georgiou - After failing to have robot dancing officially recognized as an Olympic sport, Mr Georgiou turned his spirit fingers to penning bent tales about Sydney's Queer underground for Time Out's Gay and Lesbian pages.  Reports on trans-glam bands, lesbian boot scooting and cross dressing cats lead Georgiou to also scribe the Checkout pages for Time out Sydney, covering furious fashionistas, delectable designers and desirable dating destinations. It's quietly rumoured that Georgiou also has a penchant for alliteration.

Chief Photographer: Daniel Boud - Acclaimed snapper of the stars, Mr. Boud is a photographer and conceptual artist with an unsurpassed eye for what makes Sydney tick. Off-road, side-of-stage, on the street or in the shadows, Dan lurks with a lens and an instinct for the moment that leaves you breathless.

Art Director: Phil Bunting - All art and heart, Phil Bunting is Time Out's design demigod. Born in Beatrix Potter country, he evaded a life down the mines to work with some the UK's leading design consultancies in London, Manchester and Newcastle. A prodigy in the Puddleduck mould, PB founded his own studio aged 22 then shifted cerebral sands to Dubai where his work with Agent Provocateur still sends hot creative gusts through the Middle East's highest fliers. Now four years and 150 issues in with Time Out, he's the eyes of our creative storm – the art director artists call for direction.

Picture Editor: Vashti Cooper - Manning the picture desk at Australian Consolidated Press these past two years, Vashti jousted with photographers, studios and agencies from all four corners of the earth but better yet, developed an eye for stunning images within four corners of a frame, a skill innate on TOS.
