Hankering after hot bread and pastries? Here's where...

Sydneys best... Bakeries

The crust of the matter... now we're on a roll

Bourke Street Bakery
The place to go in Suzza Hills for all your baked good needs. The lines tend to snake down the street but with good reason - their ginger brulee tarts and chocolate pastries are maddeningly good.
633 Bourke St Surry Hills 2010. (02 9699 1011)

Brasserie Bread
Popular with tradies and yummy mummies alike, these guys don't just do bread - they also do pies, sausage rolls and pastries. Owner Tony Papas (owner of top fish restaurant the Boathouse on Blackwattle Bay) also owns Allpress Espresso so while you get your sourdough, you can also bet on the coffee.
1737 Botany Rd, Banksmeadow 2019. (02 9666 6845)

Haberfield Bakery
This Italian, family run bakery has been in business over 30 years and rock the pane de casa like nobody's business. The smell of the bread perfumes the air first thing on any given morning.
153 Ramsay Street, Haberfield 2045. (02 9797 7715)

The Hellenic Bakery
A Greek bakery specialising in Greek sweets like almond shortbread (kourambiedes) as well as barley bread, they've been around for overthirty years and are a favourite with Graecophiles Sydney over. They also do a ripper spinach and cheese pie.
371 Illawarra Road, Marrickville. (02 9559 2701)

Hong Ha
These guys make a hell tasty Vietnamese pork roll (Banh mi) with dumplings on it as well as an excellent Danish. The business spills out onto the street as people line up for Hurstville's tastiest baked goods.
324 Forest Rd Hurstville, 2220. (02 9580 1268)

Sonoma
Based on San Franciscan baking techniques, this sourdough bakery have gone from supplying a few restaurants to having three different cafes as well as supplying bread to the majority of Sydney's big name restaurants. Their olive bread is great, as is the soy and linseed with whole soy-beans studded through it.
22/98 Young St, Waterloo 2017. (02 9690 2060)

St Honore
The best place to buy bread after 6pm (these guys are open until 8pm), their sourdough cherry tart is a lip smacker and their love heart shaped pastries of layer upon layer of sugary flaky pastry is enough to make your eyes roll back in your head and drool like a Saint Bernard.
50 Miller St North Sydney, 2060. (02 9929 4388)

Victoire
A good raisin bread can be a hard thing to find short of making it yourself but these guys do an exceptional version - it's one of the only non-sourdough breads available but its cinnamon spiked dough is hard to beat. There are also some great pies to be had here, and they use the beer - Three Monts - in the starter for their bread.
285 Darling Street, Balmain 2041. (02 9818 5529)

Wellington Cake Shop
For truly phenominal Jewish offerings, you can't look past the walnut twists and the best sour cherry strudels this side of Hungary. Don't miss the kugelhopf (sort of like a mix between bread and cake).
157 Bondi Road, Bondi 2026. (02 9389 4555)
