Euro 2008

Euro 2008

It's a long way from home but you can be sure that Euro 2008, the world's second largest football tournament which kicks off in Austria and Switzerland this Saturday, will be responsible for a few bleary eyes and under-the-desk naps in coming weeks.

It is only the second time that the tournament has been hosted by two countries, the first being Euro 2000 hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands. A notable absence this year will be England, who failed to qualify for the first time since 1984.

The 48-year history of the tournament has been peppered with more upsets than you can poke a goalpost at, culminating in 2004 with Greece's 1-0 triumph over hosts Portugal after entering the comp at odds of 150-1 to win it. Betting supremos Ladbrokes have Germany as the favourite to take home the trophy but will Euro 2008 produce another surprise victor for the record books?

If you value your sleep, you can catch up on each night's action at www.euro2008.uefa.com from 8-30 June.
