A is for Aquarium

The Sydney Aquarium is one of the largest in the world and one of the city's number one attractions. Founded in 1988, the Aquarium boasts two underwater tunnels beneath the seal and shark tanks, over 650 species and 6,000 individual fish and other aquatic creatures collected from Australia's water habitats.

Designed by architects to resemble a wave, the Aquarium's four main exhibits are divided accordingly: Northern and Southern Rivers, and Northern and Southern Oceans, all with their respective beasties. The Aquarium also has a re-creation of the Great Barrier Reef coral environment and regular feeding times for seals, sharks, crocs and penguins.

Right next door is Sydney Wildlife World, so visitors might like to visit both attractions in one day and buy tickets at a discount. And, if the crowds get too much for you, you can always take a nice walk alongside the sparkling Harbour.

Sydney Aquarium, Aquarium Pier, Darling Harbour, Sydney 2000. (02 262 2300). Mon-Sun. 9am-10pm. Adult $29.50; child $15; concession $20.50. Combined Aquarium-Wildlife World tickets: Adult $48; child $26.50; concession $35.
