What is it?

Founded in 1973, the Biennale of Sydney is today ranked as one of the world's leading international festivals of contemporary art. It was created to provide an international showcase for contemporary art with a simple aim: to present a program that challenged traditional thinking and encourage new levels of enthusiasm for innovative creative expression.

When does it happen?

Every two years over a 12-week period, opening Wednesday 18 June and running until Sunday
7 September. The 2008 festival is the 16th Biennale.

History?

Thirty-seven artists were represented from 15 countries when the very first Biennale took place in '73. This year, more than 180 artists will participate with over 50 newly created artworks presented with some ground-breaking art.

Does it have a theme?

The theme of this year's Biennale is Revolutions - Forms The Turn, a celebration of the defiant spirit and suggests the impulse to revolt, a desire for change and seeing the world differently.
