Quarantine station

Quarantine station

If it's adventure you thrive on, head to the Quarantine Station. The newly restored historic venue offers a mixed bag of tours, theatre and dining delights. Located in Sydney Harbour National Park in Manly, the origins of this landmark reach right back to the 1830s when migrant ships arrived at North Head after a six-month journey, only to drop-off disease stricken passengers at the quarantine station. A rough welcome, no?

Today, the station holds various different walking tours, retelling the harrowing day-to-day experiences of it's former residents (some of whom are rumoured to haunt the premises). Options include the Quarantine Story Day Tour, which divulges all the dirty details of life for the unfortunate new Australians who called the island home between 1830 until 1984. Or, the Family (or Adult) Ghost Tour might tickle your fancy - depending on your age and squeamishness level. These nocturnal tours investigate paranormal events and tell the oft-disturbing, frequently inspiring stories of the roving ‘patients' who waft around a heritage listed complex of over 65 rooms.

Don't skip Defiance either. This theatre reenactment held in the renovated Q Station structures gives a compellingly authentic twist to story time. And, after your knees wobble and your legs give out, hit the Boilerhouse Restaurant on Quarantine Beach to refuel on belly ballast or you can even get pampered at the soon-to-be-opened Destination Spa in the Doctor's Quarters. Overnight accommodation is also available, so guests can enjoy all the outdoor activities in the park from snorkeling to hiking. Shannon Langan
