Pierre Huyghe - A Forest of Lines

As part of Biennale 2008, artist Pierre Huyghe is transforming the Opera House into a forest

Pierre Huyghe - A Forest of Lines

French artist Pierre Huyghe will be presenting one of his mind-bending installations as part of the 2008 Biennale. For just 24 hours - from 12pm on Wednesday 9 July - the Opera House will be transformed into a forest, with trees covering the stage, and lining the circles of the Concert Hall.

With A Forest Of Lines, Huyghe aims to create an all-encompassing experience, with no beginning, no end, no division between stage and audience, and no specified direction or path to take. In short, it is the Sydney Opera House "liberated" from its conventional purpose.

Known internationally for his recreation of the 70s film Dog Day Afternoon, this exhibit represents a gentler side to Huyghe's work. Produced in conjunction with local company Rent-A-Garden, the transformation of Sydney's most famous building is designed to challenge the mind, rather than the heart rate.

If you find an indoor forest too surreal to make any sense of, you can listen to the artist's explanation, at the Museum of Contemporary Art from 5.30pm on Thursday 10 July. RB

A Forest Of Lines, Sydney Opera House, Bennelong Point, Circular Quay 2000. Wed 9 Jul-Thu 10 Jul, 12pm. Free.
